For this set, I taped newspaper around my bath/shower, then I spray painted the Eye of Providence onto the newspaper with pink and orange (two of the lesbian pride colors), then I covered the walls with googly eyes and emphasized the Eye of Providence with pipe cleaners. The Eye of Providence is supposed to be a comforting reminder that God is watching over you, but the sentiment is a bit more intimidating when you’re queer. I didn’t allow myself to even think about exploring my sexuality until late into high school, because of the looming idea that God is in my head. I think this is the headspace a lot of young LGBTQA+ people have when they’re raised religiously. My models for this image are two of my best friends, Mak and Soph; since Soph was raised religiously I wanted them to be protecting Mak from the Eye of Providence, which is something that has haunted their thoughts as well, while Mak can rest peacefully.
